Single Soon By Selena Gomez
"Single Soon" is an empowering, fun and flirty track. It finds Selena Gomez about to end her romance and embrace her newfound singlehood.I'm pickin' out this dress
Tryin' on these shoes
'Cause I'll be single soon
I'll be single soon
Gomez isn't playing around anymore with a relationship that's making her unhappy. She's ditching her man and raiding her closet for an outfit that screams future possibilities.
During the first verse, Gomez plots the breakup.
Should I do it on the phone?
Should I leave a little note in the pocket of his coat?
These lines highlight Gomez's internal struggle and sensitivity to the emotional aspects of the split.
Gomez considers ending the relationship without a direct confrontation.
Maybe I'll just disappear
I don't want to see a tear
And the weekend's almost here
She dated Justin Bieber, Zayn Malik and The Weeknd in the past, but Gomez hasn't explicitly confirmed the song is about any specific ex. But there is a breadcrumb trail that some fans think might lead back to The Weeknd. The Canadian star has a song called "Save Your Tears," and Gomez might be dropping a nod. That line's got eyebrows raising, especially when she mentions "the weekend" in the next breath.
Gomez shut down the speculation that "Single Soon" is about The Weeknd. She wrote on Instagram: "Couldn't be more false."
Selena Gomez wrote "Single Now" with Lisa Scinta, Phil Shaouy, Ross Golan, Ammar Malik, Jacob Kasher, Benny Blanco, and Cashmere Cat. Benny Blanco and Cashmere Cat also produced the '80s-esque track.
Gomez originally recorded the going-out anthem for her third studio album, Rare. It was later discarded along with all the other material she recorded with Benny Blanco and Cashmere Cat. However, "Single Again" was re-worked and released on August 25, 2023.
"Y'all have been asking for new music for a while," Gomez wrote on social media to announce the song. "Since I'm not quite done with SG3, I wanted to put out a fun little song I wrote a while back that's perfect for the end of summer."
Report this ad Philip Andelman directed the music video, which kicks off with Gomez penning a note that spells out, "I'm sorry, I can't, don't hate me." She slides it onto the desk of an ex, a move that gives a playful nod to a signature moment from Sex and the City when Jack Berger abruptly breaks up with Carrie Bradshaw via a terse sticky note.
Gomez steps into the spotlight in a sparkling dress, links arms with her squad, and clinks glasses to liberty. They shake off the past, savoring the night with dance moves that set the floor on fire. It's a tale of empowerment with a dash of drama, wrapped up in shimmer and sass.
This is the fourth video that music video director and photographer Philip Andelman has shot for Gomez, following "Round and Round" (2010), "Hit the Lights," (2011) and "Slow Down" (2013).
"Single Soon" takes a nod from Miley Cyrus' hit song "Flowers." Both songs are about heartbreak and moving on, but they approach the topic in different ways. "Single Soon" is a more upbeat and positive song, while "Flowers" is more reflective and melancholy. Coincidentally, Cyrus released her song "Used To Be Young" the same day Gomez dropped "Single Now."
Selena Gomez and the other songwriters first worked on the song when she was dating The Weekend, so it wasn't the right time to release it back then.
"I did the songs six years ago and we brought it back, and we reproduced it and it sounds amazing and I'm so proud of it," Gomez told PopCrush Nights after dropping the song.
"It is that era in my life. I didn't release it back then because I wasn't in that place. Genuinely I feel so happy, and I haven't been in a relationship in five years and I'm happy as can be and feel like I'm finally in a place where like whatever comes my way it'll just add to my life, it won't take anything away," she added.
